Sadness

I have allowed myself much time for wallowing. It’s it shallow, like the beach. I dip my toes in and look around to see if I have time to go ankle-deep before I need to be back.
It’s cold, but refreshing. I need it, to remember every moment I ever spent in her presence, to remember every tiny thing she ever taught me. I walk along the shore, the sun on my face, warm. My toes in an alternate place, crisp, cold, as the water rushes over my feet lightly.
The tidal wave I expect never comes. I suspect I am not ready for it yet. My footing is too unsteady.
My foot arches sharply as I step on a rock.
No, I am not ready yet.

I’m not sure that it can be accurately said that time heals. It just changes the shape of our grief.
