Why Disney Can Suck It
Remember Lisa? (If you haven’t read it, go read and come back.)
Well, Whymommy reached out to Disney to help with the trip for Lisa.
Disney had reached out to mommy bloggers in March, offering a free trip in order to collect input on how to reach out to bloggers. Okay fine.
As for Whymommy’s request for Lisa? Well, they responded very strangely. They didn’t exactly say no, they said “not our department.” I see red-tape ahead and honestly, Lisa might not have time for red-tape. She wants to go while she is well enough, to have one special memory with her daughters.
I guess we expect more from a company like this. A family-oriented company.
Daren, the boys and I were planning on going there as a family next year — and bringing my grandparents and his parents. There is NO WAY now. Not a chance. So help me I will never buy another thing that has Disney on the label. I’m beyond furious.
I know Disney doesn’t have to grant the one wish of this mother (with her third run of cancer) to two young daughters. But when they are already shelling out thousands to hear bloggers speak on the very topic of how to connect with bloggers?
Captain Obvious says this isn’t the way to do it, Mickey.

wow. how…incredibly LAME of disney. i don’t get it…
they have plenty of money. what, are they afraid other parents and families who don’t have much time together will want to come to the supposed “happiest place on earth”, too? and are they afraid the word will get out that they actually practice what they preach by being gracious enough to extend such offers?
makes no sense.

I really don’t understand why these corporations haven’t realized that bloggers talk to each other. How can they not figure out that for the cost of a few comps to their hotel and parks that they would get it back a thousand fold for the word of mouth publicity they would get. Not to mention the number of people who have media credentials and contacts? One of these days they will have to get on board for more than a little lip-service.

So ridiculous. I used to love them. I’m starting to worry. They need to do making up with the community STAT.

Perhaps we can start our own collection to send Lisa and her family to Disney. Her daughters shouldn’t have to suffer just because Disney is dropping the ball. I’ll make the first donation. Where do I send it?

I’m a huge Disney World fan, so you can take this with a grain of salt, but I’m not quite as bothered by Disney’s reponse. They most likely get tons of requests like this, and I assume thewy have a set policy to refer any and all of them to this other agency. In fact, they dont even do their own Make-a-Wish stuff – those granted with wishes don’t even stay on Disney property – there is a separate facility not run by Disney (although they do grant special extras). So perhaps this referral will have good results.
It would have been nice if they had offered something, but I can understand having to stick with a policy. Otherwise, they would be overrun with such requests, both legitimate and not.

Corporate is corporate, no matter how cute the mascot.
Still. I guess this surprises me.

I guess I’m not really suprised or bothered by Disney’s response. I have a friend who works for Disney as a customer service rep (I forget exactly what her job title is) and she says that they are overwhelmed by requests for free trips and the like. While I personaly would like to see Lisa and her family get to Disney World I understand why there’s not much Disney can do to help. I mean, they could but then where do they draw the line? Say yes to Lisa but no to the next 200 people who ask? Don’t misunderstand, I want more than anything for Lisa to be able to go but I also totally understand why Disney can’t help out here. Just my two cents.

Opps, I should have mentioned that I contacted the people I know at Disney to ask if there was something they could do and I got a no. Because otherwise my post sounds like “I know people at Disney but I’m not even gonna ask them for help nah nah nah!”

Thank you all for your opinions. Jen, I do see your point but the whole blogger relations thing was my point. If they wanted to do things right and still deal with a 3rd party, they could have done it better than a flippant email. It just seemed rather lame for a company like that. And thank you for also trying.
Dana – http://miss-ann-thrope.com has all the details and many posts about the efforts by everyone as well as all information about where to donate. As far as I know, the trip is paid for, and now we’re raising $ for the flights. Any additional money will be given to Lisa and her family for medical bills, or anything else they need. I’d love nothing more than to give her as much as possible.

The trip part is a done deal. We just need a fuckton of money and airfare.

Even if they didn’t give a free trip, they could have helped out in some way. Perhaps with a discount, or helped out with airfare or something.
They should really consider making a fund for this kind of thing…

What the fuck? Like you said – because of the blogger connection thing, this makes NOOOOOO sense.
Someone in the PR department dropped the ball on this one.
